Research Task: Deborah Joseph

 Hello !

Today I would like to present you my last research for my media project.

Name something you have researched for your project?

I have researched the Glamour UK Editor-in-Chef Deborah Joseph.

Explain how you researched this?

I looked on the internet who is the main editor of Glamour UK magazine. I found the person responsible for text editing on magazine official website and I started looking for some articles and interviews about her. I gather some information from 5 different sources, such as interview for The Guardian magazine, or raport from a meeting with Joseph held at Manchester High School for Girls., but some of them were inappropriate for a research and I had to find another one. Finally I started writing a post with intention to explain how Deborah Joseph life facts relate to my project.

What facts did you discover?

  • she was a former MHSG pupil herself
  • Deborah is an award-winning editor
  • she has over 20 years experience in digital and print publishing.
  • In her life she has worked for Daily Mail newspaper , Easy Living, Cosmopolitan and Brides magazines
  • her adventure with Glamour started in 2004 as entertainment editor, later associate editor and she came back after a few years break and become Glamour editor-in-chief.
  • known for changing Glamour image to a new strategy ' Digital magazine'
  • she has nonobvious ethnicity ( her mom is Iranian, dad British born half German and half Iranian)

What NEW conclusions did you establish?

In 2020 interviewed by The Times magazine Deborah Joseph for the first time revealed the truth about her experiences of prejudice and racism throughout her life and at work - for the colour of her skin and religion. ''From being labelled as ‘new’ at work (that’s ‘not entirely white’) to being told to ‘go back to where I come from’ - that’ll be Manchester then - and my favourite of all ‘where am I <really> from?’ '' wrote Deborah in her Instagram post. The past life experience and distorted view on tolerance and respect within society pushed Joseph to include at the heart of media industry actions and conversations about diversity.

The past that Glamour editor-in-chief Deborah Joseph can't remove from her memory helped her discover complex issue that affect many people, especially in multicultural metropolises, such as London. we struggle to succeed in places where people are extremely prejudiced. It is likely impossible to achieve anything if on your way to goal you meet hostile and intolerant crowds...

Since Deborah become a part of Glamour UK team some changes had been made for better... Iconic Brand was reimagined for the digital age, magazine itself has become more innovative, as strong digital strategy is a key to success because of Covid-19. Deborah Joseph put Glamour magazine in a new light and revolutionised media industry within the United Kingdom, what was recognised by readership.

How does it apply to the project?

Deborah Joseph is a strong woman that decided to change the image of an iconic, well-known magazine and make a change in a media industry. She as Glamour UK editor-in-chief said that
“You have a voice through your writing,”, what suggest that anyone can take control of their life and feel empowered.

In my own project I would like to make a change and show natural women and destroy the stereotypically untrue, but beautiful image of a woman that doesn't exist in a reality, as she is only a figment of magazine producer's imagination. The way in which I wish to represent women would reflect the real readership with problems, shortcomings, low self-esteem, the true world we live in and common aspects of it.
